CHLORINE

Chlorine (Cl) - a greenish yellow gaseous element, highly irritating to the organs of respiration. It is used as a powerful bleaching agent. It is used in treating drinking water, swimming pools etc., to kill bacteria and micro-organisms. There is much concern about the levels of residual chlorine in drinking water as it is thought to combine with certain organic elements to form toxic chemicals and carcinogens such as trihalomethanes. Several epidemiological studies, including research from the National Cancer Institute (USA), linked the chlorination of drinking water to increasing an individuals risk of developing bladder cancer.  Some of the studies also claimed a higher incidence of Hodgkin disease, colorectal, oesophageal and breast cancer. Chlorination has also been associated with declining sperm count, male infertility and circulatory disturbances based on some animal studies. Recent trend in water treatment is to use chloramines ( a compound of chlorine and ammonia ) instead of chlorine to reduce production of trihalomethans and other chlorination by-products.
